This weekend at Phillip Island it was the lowest of lows. VW Racing driver Stewart McColl lost his life during Qualifying on Saturday afternoon. He and his new team mate Paul Stokel were to start Sundays race from the front row. Further back down the grid were the cars of Protecnica that were struggling for pace.<br> <br> Qualifying saw the 2 VWs on front row with the help of VW Engine tuner obviously paying off. The WRX of Wayne was in 10th and Justin at 12th with the 350Z placed 16th.<br> <br> After a solemn remembrance to Stewart McColl, race 1 commenced with a blank front row. Wayne drove well and managed to get up to 6th but Justin even with great driving was not going to finish high after suffering a blown tyre. <br> <br> Race 2 started with a bit more normality, Wayne could not hold onto 6th and dropped back to 9th while Justin suffered yet another blown tyre but this time was not able to make it over the line. The 350Z of Nathan Pilkington worked its way up to finish in 15th.<br> <br> Race 3 and the last one for GT Performance of a very sombre weekend. PSC also taking their spare car "just in case" was a good idea as the seat was filled at the last minute by V8 Brute driver Damien "Ice" White.<br> <br> Kenny had his best qualifying place so far with a 3rd place in Qualifying 1, Damien never been in an F3 car was doing well getting used to the car and the very different characteristics to a V8 Brute!<br> <br> Qualifying 2 had Kenny getting knocked out of 3rd to a still very good 4th. Damien doing exceptionally well, qualifying up in 10th place.<br> <br> Race 1 saw a great start from Kenny, as we have come to expect, he unfortunately lost the places back and ended up finishing a very happy 4th. Initially the Protecnica boys were not right on the pace for qualifying although continually working the car towards race day. Four cars in the top 7 of qualifying with Bilstein Racing backup was not too bad though. <br> VW was performing well and the WRXs of Protecnica sat closely together in 6 & 7 with Wayne just in front of Justin.<br> <br> Race 1 saw Justin and Wayne get great starts with obviously no team orders Justin rounds up Wayne in the last 2 corners of the first lap and eagerly hunts down Paul Stokel in the VW. Bob Pearson in the RX7 broke the lap record for the class on the way to coming second with Justin behind him. Wayne just managed to get the VW before the finish line to take 4th, the VW came in 5th.<br> <br> What a start in Race 2! Justin broke a rear drive shaft on the line and still managed to bring the WRX home in 8th place with 3WD being not quite the same as AWD. Bob and Wayne battled it out for second place with championship leader Mark King closing the gap up behind them. <br> <br> Race 3 was a sordid affair, at one point the WRXs were sitting in 1st and 3rd then Wayne ended up in the dirt and bogged with Justin left to fly the Blue Subaru flag, he did well and got the WRX up to 1st with Mark King behind him. Peter Hacket was welcomed back to the team to drive the second car due to engine troubles in Peters current team.<br> <br> Kenny Habul continued on in PSCs No.1 car, while never being to Winton before, Kenny was doing a great job in getting to know the track and put in respectable times. Kenny posted 8th fastest in qualifying 1, only completing 6 laps before spinning the car and getting stuck for the rest of the session. Peter put his car on 6th for the first Qualifying with only a second covering the top 6 places.<br> Qualifying 2 saw much the same as the first although Kenny only gave himself 3 laps this time to put the car 8th on the grid.<br> <br> The first race saw Kenny get his usual good start but unfortunately did not finish the race while Peter gained his way up to finish in 5th.<br> <br> Race 2 had a bit of drama with Peters car having trouble on the Dummy grid and loosing an engine cover during the race causing a spin, Peter managed to get the car back up some places to finish 13th. While Kenny had a much better race, finishing in 5th place - only 2 seconds behind championship leader Barton Mawer.
